CRL Scotland recently completed a challenging and rewarding project as the sub-contractor for CTS Shopfitting Ltd, with Waitrose as the client. This refurbishment took place in a busy area of Edinburgh, near Fettes College, adding to the complexity of the task.

The project focused on refurbishing the car park ramp, which posed unique logistical challenges. The site had very limited laydown and storage space, as the ramp was directly adjacent to the delivery entrance for goods. Moreover, with a nearby school and high volumes of pupil traffic crossing the work area, safety and traffic management were top priorities throughout the project.

Given Scotland's unpredictable weather, the entire ramp was encapsulated to allow the works to continue even in poor conditions. This was critical, as the project had a tight timeline, with penalties for any delays.

The refurbishment involved removing the existing ramp structure and breaking it down to the precast concrete planks. A new 80mm deep ready-mix concrete screed with a 10mm aggregate was then laid, and the surface prepared through captive grit blasting. Following this, the Triflex ProPark ramp system was installed, providing a durable and waterproof decking solution. The works were finished by applying new road markings and carrying out repairs to the gullies and Aco drainage channels. The temporary works, including scaffolding, were then stripped and removed, and the ramp handed back to the client.

Throughout the eight-week project, CRL Scotland coordinated closely with the main contractor, ensuring that all work was carried out efficiently in a tight and busy working environment. Stringent traffic management protocols were adhered to in order to safeguard both workers and the public, especially in light of the school nearby.

This £345,000 project highlights CRL Scotland’s expertise in handling complex refurbishments under challenging conditions, delivering high-quality results while meeting deadlines and budgetary expectations.
