When first we encountered the water tower below, it had been fitted with a heavy, draped, system; The system clearly ‘designed’ to allow material to fall to ground, but not too far from the structure. However, the structure is situated in a public park, with a footpath and children’s playground closely adjacent. In December 2021 we were asked to repair the netting, which had flapped itself to pieces. In February 2023 we replaced it with a bespoke tailored system, complimented by Client and neighbouring residents alike. In August 2024 we were asked to open windows in the netting, to facilitate installation of new antenna, which led to full removal, with the netting then reinstated in May 2026.
The Client has an extensive portfolio of assets, both directly owned and leased space, with maintenance and repair prioritised and tailored to very tight budgets. We offer safety netting systems that fill a limited, but common, set of circumstances, helping Clients manage their structures, at a co. they consider reasonable, with the benefit to them of both continual monitoring, for which they have no resource, and sympathetic aesthetics, an important factor in some contexts.
For us, to optimise our outcomes, our involvement must be labour intensive, with a few very low value projects and lots of input, but so far, the follow-on work is worth the effort. We currently have two water towers for tailored netting installation and a second phase of draped netting repairs on another. We have also undertaken condition assessments drawing in input from CRL and structural investigations, drawing in Structural Engineering input from Samuely.

In an increasing number of cases, CRL Surveys, take on ongoing care of the structures, mainly concrete, that we Investigate. As Budgets tighten and the approach to maintenance and repair becomes prioritised, and in many cases, short-term, rightly, or wrongly; it depends which side of the fence you sit, Clients look for other options.
A few years ago, CRL Surveys, began offering bespoke, tailored, netting systems. Installed following a survey, including removal of loose material and sometimes slurry-coating of defects; the systems intended to add confidence after our ‘make-safe’ operations. Additional confidence is provided to Clients by provision of Operations Manuals and after sales services, with trust gained by taking responsibility for monitoring of the installations and the provision of timely maintenance and repair of them, keeping the CRL Brand uppermost in their minds.
Systems were installed on Park Towers in London, 20+ years ago, functioning for over 8years, preventing small mosaic tiles from falling and scratching the surrounding Ferrari and Lamborghini, and Coleg Harlech student residences, 15+ years ago, which survived for over 10years, exposed to aggressive SW winds. In both cases the systems held the consequences of environmental exposure at bay until pukka repairs could be done, on the former undertaken by CRL.
At present, we are monitoring and maintaining a system on Hilton Leeds City that we installed during the first pandemic lockdown. At that time HS2 was to link into Leeds Station next door, through the hotel which was planned for demolition. The netting here has suffered from heavy wear and tear from abseil window cleaners, so the netting has prematurely deteriorated and needs replacement. Replacement has been costed, along with concrete repairs, but the former is still in whole life costs (as far as the Clients responsibility is concerned) a cheaper option, until the end of their lease in 2032.
