The A38 is one of England’s key strategic routes, connecting the Midlands with the South West and supporting major regional and long-distance journeys. Managed by National Highways, it is an important transport corridor for communities, businesses and freight.
CRL has secured a major £7.6 million scheme to refurbish the A38 Y Pass Bridge at Egginton, Derbyshire, the largest award of any kind within CRL in the past three years. The project will bring together around 20 members of the CRL Highways team and is due to commence in September 2026, with approximately 90 weeks of construction.

The four-span bridge, built in 1967, carries the A5132 over the A38. Inspections have identified active corrosion, concrete deterioration and cracking to the piers, abutments and deck. The works will include extensive concrete repairs, replacement of bearings and expansion joints, installation of cathodic protection, full deck waterproofing, safety barrier upgrades, resurfacing and parapet works.
The complex scheme has been developed through Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) over the past three years, working closely with National Highways, Kier and a range of specialist consultants, building on ECI involvement dating back to 2020.
The project presents significant challenges, including extensive traffic management, potential incursions, uncertain concrete condition, temporary works approvals and ecological constraints.
